Au Pair

The au pairs scheme is aimed to provide young people from certain countries with the opportunity to come to the United Kingdom for a short time to work for an English-speaking family. You will be expected to work up to five hours a day for your English-speaking family. They will provide you with your own room and a weekly allowance.

In order to come to the United Kingdom as an au pair you must show that you are a single person aged between 17 and 27 with no dependants. You can live in the UK as an au pair for up to two years. You must be able to maintain and accommodate yourself without claiming public funds and must return once you have completed two years as an au pair. The countries which are included in the au pair scheme are:

  • Andorra
  • Faroe Islands
  • Romania
  • Bosnia-Herzegovina
  • Greenland
  • San Marino
  • Republic of Bulgaria
  • Macedonia
  • Turkey
  • Croatia
  • Monaco

European Economic Area nationals are not included in the official au pair scheme; but they are free to come to the United Kingdom as au pairs.
Nationals of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Republic of Croatia, Macedonia, and Turkey must get a visa from their British Embassy or Consulate before they travel to the United Kingdom.
